"Humber Career Services is an entity that helps you achieve the dream job you have in your mind & fulfill the dreams that you have seen for yourself in the future..."

Tell us about your job search/career success story.
I was hired not only because my qualifications matched the requirements of the position but also because of the confidence & posture with which I spoke my mind, without my voice shaking. I was appointed not only because I was early for the interview & that I wore a suit but because I had the right state of mind & the right attitude. I was selected not only because I had the skills & experience they were looking for but because I presented myself better than others did. I knew I had rocked the interview, I could see it in the interviewers eyes as they remained astonished by my performance. The feeling you have when you know you did it right & the confidence you have when you feel good about yourself is memorable. The career advisors were to be thanked. All of it added up, as I was the recipient of the shining star award given by Humber FYE. I will also give them credit for when I was awarded the prestigious International Student Campus Life Award in 2015 by the business school.

How has Humber Career Services helped you in your job search process?
I spent 45 quality minutes with a couple of experienced & knowledgeable mentors helping me to improve my speaking skills. I got my resume amended & also had a mock interview. Committed to bring out the excellence in me they filled me with self-confidence, positivity & a winning attitude. I was discouraged, disappointed & had a feeling like I had lost an important battle with that one interview going wrong. It had weakened my enthusiasm & nervousness had taken control of me. I blemished in many of the tasks I did & there were many situations where the decisions I took went wrong, walking into the doors of WEL105 was not one of them. It was one of the brilliant decisions I took. I did not just walk out with my resume modified or hurt by the realization of the errors I made, but I walked out with a vision & a goal. I underestimated the existence of the Career Services Department at Humber & its substantial importance to the students. The realization of its prominence is immeasurable.

What advice do you have for other students?
Humber Career Services is an entity that helps you achieve the dream job you have in your mind & fulfill the dreams that you have seen for yourself in the future. The immunity you receive from it will be incredible as it will give you the boost & the right attitude to stand in front of your dream job. You never know the roadblocks & obstacles between you & your dream job. But you will definitely realize, Career Services will play a major role in eliminating those & empowering you to overcome them. "You could have your best friend prepare you for the interview and you could have them glance over and proof read your resume. In the end they are still your friends and they will say nice things about you. The career services department will not, they will deliberately point out your mistakes and make you realize where you blundered just to improve you to be better today than you were yesterday. They do all this selflessly and without expecting anything in return from you and it's free."

"I saw first-hand how beneficial it can be to receive guidance and advice..."

Tell us about your job search/career success story.
As part of my internship program, I was required to find a placement with a company of my choice or find one through my program. For the first 2 months of applying, I was not able to secure an interview. I lost track of the number of times I edited and modified my cover letter and resume. As the end of 2nd semester was approaching, I decided to contact my program coordinator and asked her for some guidance, as I became worried about not graduating on time. We had to secure an internship before the start of summer semester in order to graduate in August. My program coordinator wisely advised me to contact Angella from Humber Career Services and I could not be more grateful for this advice. Not only did I secure 2 interviews within a week of meeting with Angella but I landed an internship at Siemens Canada Limited, an amazing medical devices company.

How has Humber Career Services helped you in your job search process?
The first thing I did after speaking with my program coordinator was contact Angella via e-mail. I sent her my resume and cover letter and she gave me great constructive feedback. Less than a week later, I got an interview with Siemens! Now was the hard part. I had spent so much time focusing on my resume, I did not spend any time researching how to do interviews. This is where Angella truly saved the day. My interview was fast approaching and I was very limited on time, as I received the call during exam week. Angella was very flexible and made time for me to come in on a Friday morning, a few hours before my last exam (which was the only available time I had). She sat with me for over 2 hours and gave me a mock interview and taught me all about the STARR method, which I will never forget! She gave me the confidence I needed to secure the position. Because of Humber Career services, I received an offer letter from Siemens and got an amazing start to my career as an RA professional.

What advice do you have for other students?
I would advise students to be patient and not lose hope if they are not able to secure an internship or a job right away. Every hiring manager is subjective so there may not be anything wrong with your resume/cover letter. Nonetheless, I would suggest making use of Humber Career Services. I saw first-hand how beneficial it can be to receive guidance and advice from dedicated people who have your best interest at heart. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain :)

Tell us about your job search/career success story.
Well it was just on a regular day when I decided to browse the Humber job portal and saw the position of Clerk for the Government of Canada. I quickly applied, and received a call within hours. I was super thrilled and I went in for an interview and was hired for a seasonal position. By working at the government of Canada I had gained so many amazing skills, knowledge in the Human Resources sector and built my confidence and educated myself thoroughly.

How has Humber Career Services helped you in your job search process?
Humber Career Service helped me a lot in the job search process because I filtered the searches according to what school I was looking for, and had found the results for the Government of Canada position.

What advice do you have for other students?
Please take advantage of all the resources that are available at the Career Center, you can go to the job fairs, do 1-1 interviews with career counsellors, get advice and seek jobs. It's a great way to seek help and also build your resume, get help with LinkedIn or just have a conversation on any tips. Advice that I would give to students is that there are a lot of great opportunities on Humber Career Portal and ways to build your resume, send in your resume online for checkup, please use their resources because they are extremely beneficial and will help after graduating.

"I am proud to say I work as a legal assistant because I had the..."

Tell us about your job search/career success story.
Since high school I have always had a keen interest and passion for the Canadian Legal System, specifically criminal law. I aspire to become a criminal lawyer and any experience in the legal field is beneficial. Unfortunately many law firms do not hire students unless they have acquired all the necessary education. When an opening was available for a legal assistant position that stressed that having an expert knowledge in the legal field was not mandatory but rather a drive and willingness to learn, I jumped at the opportunity. I am proud to say I work as a legal assistant because I had the motivation and eagerness to learn new things rather than passing on the opportunity because I was fearful that I was unqualified.

How has Humber Career Services helped you in your job search process?
Hundreds of agencies post job openings on the Humber Career website. Disgruntled at my retail job, I decided to see if there were any openings in the legal field. To my shock and awe, there was a posting for a part time legal assistant at a law firm Downtown. With no legal experience, I uploaded my resume, clicked submit and crossed my fingers. I have been fortunate enough to be working as a legal assistant for almost a year now and I cannot thank Humber Career Services enough!

What advice do you have for other students?
Even though it may seem like you lack the experience and qualifications for a job posting, apply anyways. The results may surprise you.
