GOAL PLANNING SYSTEM (GPS) - Resources for Student Success
This tool will help you to navigate your academic and career options and plan for success from orientation to graduation and beyond. Our Career & Student Success Advisor (CSSA) can help you discover your direction and tap into the resources available to you at every stage.
Stage 1: Just Starting at Humber
At this stage, you are discovering your academic and career direction. You will start to gain an awareness of your personal interests, the opportunities available to you and the resources to help you meet your goals.
Map out your pathways
- Work with a Career & Student Success Advisor to help understand your skills and academic and career options
- Explore your program choice and understand the requirements to meet your goals by talking to your Program Coordinator
- Ask yourself what kind of experience, skills and knowledge you want to gain in the future. Look at job postings online on our CareerConnect job site and highlight the skills and experience they are asking for to understand what you need to focus on
- Research new opportunities through Career Cruising that challenge you and match your interests, which you assessed through Type Focus
Explore around you
- Familiarize yourself with all of the student services available to support you during your time at Humber
- Reach out to Academic Advising & Support Services to find Peer Tutors, Math and Writing Help, and Advising
- Recognize your support network (friends, family, professors, classmates, staff and colleagues) as a source of knowledge about school, life and careers
- Attend career events including job fairs and networking sessions throughout the year
- If you are not sure if your current program is for you, talk to a Career & Student Success Advisor to evaluate your interests and explore new pathways
Prepare for your trip
- Mark down important dates that are highlighted on the Academic Calendar
- Check out the CareerConnect Job Site for volunteer, part-time and on-campus job opportunities
- Join student clubs and teams, and take part in co-curricular opportunities
- Conduct informational interviews and ask my support network questions about their career paths or goals and the routes they have taken or are exploring (training, education, experiences)
- Learn about effective networking online using LinkedIn
- Follow us on social media for event news and job search tips.
Stage 2: Midway Through Your Studies
In this intermediate academic and career development stage, you will start to explore career options, find experiential opportunities to build your competencies and fill any gaps with relevant experience.
Understand your pathway progress
- Review your grades on MyHumber to ensure you are still on track to academic success
- Research current labour market information with a Career & Student Success Advisor to understand possible opportunities
- Meet with a Career & Student Success Advisor to discuss your ideas and discover new options
Explore Route Options
- Assess your skills and explore career options by completing an online questionnaire through Career Cruising
- If you are falling back on your academic progress and need some help, reach out to Academic Advising & Support Services (Peer Tutors, Math and Writing Help, Advising)
- Take a look at career resources and web links to understand the job market and job searching strategies
Fuel up
- Review print and online resources and learn how to market my skills
- Get your resume and cover letter reviewed by a Resume Tutor, continue to build your LinkedIn profile, and practice your interview skills
- Attend free career events employer fairs, and workshops
- Look for part-time or on-campus opportunities on the CareerConnect Job Site to gain valuable experience during your studies
- Participate in on-campus events and other co-curricular opportunities
Stage 3: During Your Graduating Year
At this stage, you are likely preparing for what happens after graduation. You are putting all of the pieces together - interests, competencies, experiences and future opportunities - to help you make the leap from the classroom to the working world. - I have met with a Career & Student Success Advisor to discuss my career goals and options
- I have completed career assessments including Career Cruising and Type Focus
- I have researched my career and conducted informational interviews

- I have assessed my interests and skills through career assessments
- I have learned how to answer interview questions effectively by doing interview preparation, reviewing resources and meeting with a Career & Student Success Advisor

- I have created a professional and meaningful LinkedIn profile and know how to communicate using this tool
- I have tried out different networking strategies by attending career events(such as career fairs and employer info sessions)
- I have branded my social media presence and cleaned it up to ensure it is professional and supports my career goals based on advice from a Career & Student Success Advisor
