About The Event
The Transition to Work Program aims to enhance successful career outcomes and strategies for persons with disabilities.
The audience at the May symposium included Humber Polytechnic, University of Guelph-Humber and Seneca Polytechnic students, staff and alumni, as well as Academic Advisors from other post-secondary institutions participating in Humber's 9th Advising Conference. Humber Polytechnic students who attended can add this event to their Co-Curricular Record.
The event included two speakers followed by question and answer sessions moderated by Nafeeza Kadir, Keith Manalo and Maria Osea.
Dr. Monique Gignac of Institute for Work and Health explained how the Job Demands and Accommodation Planning Tool (JDAPT) can help identify what workplace accommodations may be most helpful to an employee with a disability. The tool is online, free, and confidential.
The second speaker, Sarah Birch of the Ontario Disability Employment Network, helped to dispel some myths and misperceptions about workplace accommodations for people with disabilities, and discussed rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
Resources for students were shared in the event chat and slide decks that outlined supports available at Humber Polytechnic, University of Guelph-Humber, and Seneca Polytechnic to help students prepare for their careers. This information can be found at the end of the document "Symposium slides #1" linked below.
A $500 gift card draw was held and the prize was won by a student at Seneca Polytechnic.
